Do you know the added value that advanced analytics can bring to your video surveillance system?
In today's world, preventing a crime from happening has obvious benefits - saving property loss, saving valuable time, saving business interruption costs and ensuring personnel safety. In today's world, finding effective and affordable ways to deter crime is essential.

According to a recent survey of burglars funded by the Alarm Industry Research and Education Foundation (AIREF), 63 percent of respondents said that they considered whether security personnel or police would respond if an alarm was triggered. About half of the burglars surveyed said they were aware that alarm calls sometimes needed to be verified prior to a response and about half of that group indicated that they took that into consideration during their target selection process.
Advanced analytics can address both of these challenges: better security response time and event verification. With live event detection, instant notifications and live event verification, it's possible to prevent bad things from happening and deter burglars.
We invite you to hear Mahesh Saptharishi, president of VideoIQ and Dave Jackson, our director of product management, explain how you can effectively use advanced analytics to detect suspicious activity and deter crime and easily add them to any existing security camera.

We announced the availability of the Rialto R Series at ISC West this past week. It generated a great deal of buzz because now it's easy to add self-learning analytics to any new or existing surveillance system.
The R-Series is a modular video analytic appliance with support of up to sixteen IP or analog cameras. It is integrated wtih View and VideoIQ Mobile (iOS and Android) so users can view live events from their VideoIQ system and respond to critical events in real-time.
The Rialto allows businesses to enhance existing surveillance systems with cutting-edge intelligence and analytics, without replacing their entire solution. The R-Series is compatible with 3rd party IP, analog or thermal cameras, and does not require infrastructure upgrades. With one sixteen-channel unit, any passive surveillance system can be transformed into a powerful, crime prevention solution. Read more.
Video analytics that work. Not a new concept at VideoIQ.
There are two things that brought a smile to my face today:
Our booth was packed the entire day. Many visitors who came to the booth because they "heard from multiple folks that VideoIQ has products with analytics that really work."
I overheard a dealer explain VideoIQ's analytics to a colleague. It was the simplest and most elegant explanation of pattern based analytics I have heard anybody give:
Colleague: "So how is this different?"
Dealer: "How do you tell a person apart from a dog?"
Colleague: "A person looks different from a dog"
Dealer: "Exactly! You didn't say by their size. VideoIQ knows what a person looks like and they don't care about size. Don't need calibration."
Colleague: "That makes sense".
All my complicated explanations of how we train pattern classifiers using terabytes of data pale in comparison to this simple explanation. I like to talk about how our sophisticated neural network learns much like humans do, but the dealer conveyed the point efficiently without invoking any explicit anthropomorphic analogy. It was a good day.

Why all the excitement around the Rialto family?
Because VideoIQ just released the R-Series – which opens up a whole new market for any new or existing surveillance installation.
The Rialto R-Series is a modular video analytic appliance with support for up to sixteen IP or analog cameras.
Here are top 2 reasons why this matters (Reasons I heard directly from dealers):
-
Many medium to large camera installs from years past are all analog. These customers are slowly migrating to IP cameras, but migrating to megapixel (HD) IP cameras. The Rialto R-Series is especially attractive because it scales from analog cameras to HD IP cameras. And, as customers choose to upgrade, they just need to replace a blade.
Finally, mobile support for the Rialto is just icing on the cake. Download our mobile trial and see for yourself.

We take the gift of sight for granted. If we were to define the term to some level of precision, it would consist of the following parts:
- Understand the structure and elements that compose the environment (e.g., a house, a tree, a road, a crosswalk, etc..)
- Identify the elements that are of interest (e.g., a vehicle heading towards you while you are trying to use the crosswalk)
- Understand and interpret these interesting elements
(e.g., the vehicle seems to be heading towards you awfully fast)
- Act on this understanding and interpretation (e.g., decide whether you should trust the vehicle to stop or wait – you decide to wait)
- Learn from the consequences of the action (e.g., the vehicle didn’t stop and that blue sports car in your neighborhood has a reckless driver. You will always wait to cross the road the next time you see that car)
The visual system of any animal is a fairly complex neural network whose functional capacity has evolved over many millennia. But, an infant still has to learn to “see” – to learn the concept of an “object,” to understand that an object is a person, to understand that this person continues to exist even when the infant cannot see this person. Animate vision is a bootstrapped learning process wherein the animal, throughout its life, seeks to identify, organize, understand and interpret visual sensory input. A child learns that a dog comes in many shapes, sizes and colors, but is still a dog. A chair comes in different shapes and sizes, but we know that it is an object that we can sit on without explicitly being told. We extrapolate, confirm and learn – i.e., we bootstrap the growth of our knowledge and intelligence: cognition.
The reputation of video analytics has gone through more peaks and valleys in the past fifteen years than a sinusoidal curve (humor intended). This curve has been on the upswing recently and is showing signs of breaking free from its cursed past. Gone are the days of needing to watch hours of video footage to uncover forensic evidence. We all understand traditional security and surveillance can be expensive and unreliable due to the inability to monitor 24/7/365.
Today, video analytics coupled with active learning technology changes for the better one most critical factor: Accuracy. Continuous active learning increases analytics accuracy to the point where acting on what matters when it matters is reality. Now, you are capable and aware of detecting suspicious activity before it results in a bad outcome because VideoIQ’s proprietary video analysis software watched your live security feed – ALWAYS. It’s also never been easier for end-users to respond – right from their mobile device or for professional monitoring services to respond for them. Accuracy and speed of detection enables action -- action that allows customers to exercise that ounce of prevention by responding in real-time rather than viewing footage after the fact.

In the ultra-cyber focused world we live in, the paranoia of a crippling cyber-attack causes many organizations to overlook the basics when it comes to physically securing their facilities. The recent breach of the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge Tennessee shows that even the elite firms charged with guarding the world’s uranium are guilty of the occasional oversight — depending on outdated surveillance technology for critical infrastructure security. Unfortunately for the Babcock & Wilcox-led partnership responsible for managing the facility, a simple oversight can hurt to the tune of $20.2 million.
Three protesters (one of whom was an 82-year old nun!!) were able to cut through a perimeter fence, through 3 additional “high security” fences, and reach the plants “secured” area. It was here that they proceeded to graffiti peace messages and splash human blood over the uranium storehouse. Scarier still, the picture to the left shows the hole cut through the perimeter fence, still held together with zip ties, 4 months after the incident occurred!
Unlike your standard copper theft, often resulting in massive power outages and millions in lost revenue, Y-12 did not experience any direct interruptions in their day-to-day operations. Instead, their suffering came in the intangible form of a tarnished company image followed by a massive loss of potential revenue. The National Nuclear Security Administration awarded B&W with only $35.9 million of an available $60.9 million, docking the management firm$ 12.2 million for the incident as well as another $10 million in the form of a “negative overall management fee adjustment”.
No longer is it acceptable to simply react to theft, vandalism and attacks. As B&W experienced firsthand, the negative publicity associated with a security breach can cost exponentially more in damaged brand image than the physical loss itself. That’s why at VideoIQ we focus on preventing those bad things from happening in the first place. With our industry-leading intelligent, video analytics, you’ll know before that mischievous nun even reaches the first fence.
Let us help you assess and mitigate risk, protect your valuable brand image, and sleep easy tonight.
